Bill pushed to avoid congressional approval on mailable tariff adjustments.
Senator Rick Scott of Florida introduced a bill to grant federal trade authorities additional control over tariffs on other countries. The Trade Deficit Elimination Act of 2026 seeks to eliminate deficits on traded goods between the U.S. and countries that have trade imbalances.
Under the legislation, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer would create a yearly watchlist, and tariffs already in place would be imposed, increased, decreased, suspended, or modified to achieve balance. Congressional approval would not be needed, but the House Ways and Means and Senate Finance Committees would have to be consulted. Key products would be excluded from the plan, including raw materials, critical goods which cannot face supply disruption, or items used for national defense.
“Previous generations of Americans gave us an economic superpower; it’s our job to preserve what they built and to leave America better than we found it for our children and grandchildren. That means we can’t let other countries rip us off,“ Senator Scott stated. “In recent years, our trading partners have taken advantage of access to American markets while unfairly crowding American products out of their own countries.”
